GTA 6 lands on November 19, 2026, and the PS5 vs PS5 Pro question comes down to price, storage and performance details nobody has confirmed yet.
Last verified: September 25, 2026. We'll update this comparison when GTA 6 launches on November 19.
At a glance
- Verdict: if you already own a PS5, you don't need a PS5 Pro to play GTA 6. The Pro is a "nice to have" for people with a 4K TV and room in the budget, not a requirement, and nobody has confirmed how much better GTA 6 will actually look or run on it.
- The gap: at Sony's official US prices (since April 2, 2026), the PS5 Pro costs $899.99, which is $250 more than the standard PS5 and $300 more than the PS5 Digital Edition.
- What's confirmed: Sony's PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as PS5 Pro Enhanced. That's it. No official resolution, frame-rate or ray-tracing numbers exist for either console.
- Boxed copy, no disc: Rockstar says physical copies of GTA 6 contain a download code, not a disc, so you don't need the Disc Drive for GTA 6 on any PS5 model.
- Timing: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PS5 + GTA 6 bundle has been announced so far.
PS5 vs PS5 Pro: prices and specs side by side
Prices below are Sony's official US prices after the increase that took effect on April 2, 2026, as announced on the PlayStation Blog. Retail prices can move, and PlayStation Direct listed some models as currently unavailable when we checked.
| PS5 (disc) | PS5 Digital Edition | PS5 Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official US price | $649.99 | $599.99 | $899.99 |
| Storage | 1TB | 825GB | 2TB |
| Disc drive | Built in | No (add-on Disc Drive, $79.99) | No (add-on Disc Drive, $79.99) |
| GTA 6 boxed copy | Download code, no disc | Download code, no disc | Download code, no disc |
| Key extras | — | — | Bigger GPU, faster memory, stronger ray tracing, PSSR upscaling, Wi-Fi 7 |
| Amazon | PS5 on Amazon | PS5 Digital Edition on Amazon | PS5 Pro on Amazon |
PS5 vs PS5 Pro: the key differences, beyond GTA 6
- Graphics power: according to Sony's PS5 Pro announcement, the Pro's GPU has 67% more compute units, its memory is 28% faster, it renders up to 45% faster than the standard PS5, and ray tracing runs up to two to three times faster. Sony's Pro page says gains vary by game: some of its 100+ Enhanced titles target 60 fps, some go up to 120 fps.
- Upscaling: the Pro adds PSSR, Sony's own upscaling technology, which the standard PS5 doesn't have. How much sharper a given game looks depends on how its developer uses it.
- Storage: 2TB on the Pro versus 1TB on the standard PS5 and 825GB on the Digital Edition. Part of the SSD is reserved for system software on every model.
- Wi-Fi 7: the Pro supports it, but only with a compatible router, per Sony's Pro page.
- Disc drive: only the standard PS5 has one built in. The Pro and the Digital Edition need the add-on Disc Drive for disc-based games and movies. GTA 6 isn't one of them: its boxed copy is a download code.
The Pro is more capable hardware across the board. For GTA 6 specifically, how Rockstar spends that headroom is still unknown.
What's confirmed for GTA 6 on PS5 Pro (and what isn't)
Let's split this cleanly, because a lot of what's circulating online is guesswork.
Confirmed
- Release date: November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Rockstar's official GTA VI page. The game had already slipped twice, from 2025 to May 26, 2026, then to November 19.
- PS5 Pro Enhanced: Sony's US PlayStation Store listing carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge. VICE covered it in June 2026. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what the enhancements are.
- Editions and prices (US PS Store): Standard at $79.99, Ultimate at $99.99, plus a limited collector's edition called The Vice City Collection with no price listed on Rockstar's page.
- Pre-order bonus: the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+.
- "Plays Best On PlayStation 5" appears on Rockstar's page.
- No PC version has been announced. That could change later, but right now console is the only way to play at launch.
Not confirmed
- Any resolution target for GTA 6 on PS5 or PS5 Pro.
- Any frame-rate target, including whether a 60 fps mode exists on the Pro.
- Any Pro-specific ray-tracing features.
- The game's install size.
The safest summary is this: Sony lists GTA 6 as PS5 Pro Enhanced; Rockstar hasn't detailed resolution or frame-rate targets.
Rumors and reported comments
Treat everything in this section as unverified.
- 30 fps on consoles: Game Rant reported on August 31, 2026 that Rob Nelson of Rockstar North said the console builds run at 30 fps, with no commitment to 60 fps. These are reported remarks, not an official Rockstar statement we could trace to a primary source.
- "4K30 on Pro": TweakTown reported on leaked PS5 Pro Enhanced tag requirements that point to GTA 6 running at 4K and 30 fps on the Pro. It's a leak, not an announcement.
- "60 fps on Pro": the insider known as HipHopGamer has reportedly claimed the game will hit 60 fps on the Pro. Again, unconfirmed, and it contradicts the other reports above.
In short: the rumors don't agree with each other, and none of them come from Rockstar. Don't buy a $900 console on the strength of any single one.
Is the PS5 Pro worth it? Decision by player profile
You already own a PS5
Keep it. GTA 6 runs on the base PS5, and the upgrade means paying $899.99 for a console you mostly already have. Unless you play on a 4K TV and want the sharpest possible image, wait until Rockstar or independent outlets show what the Pro version actually does.
You don't own a console yet
This is where the Pro makes the most sense. The $250 gap over the disc PS5 gets you double the storage, the extra GPU muscle, and whatever Rockstar does with the Enhanced version. If budget is tight, the standard PS5 still plays GTA 6, and the savings would cover the Standard edition about three times over.
Boxed copy vs digital, and your disc collection
GTA 6's boxed version contains a download code, not a disc, per Rockstar Support, and it goes on sale from November 12, a week before the game unlocks on November 19. The disc drive only matters for your other PS5/PS4 discs and movies: the standard PS5 has one built in, while the Digital Edition and Pro need the separate PS5 Disc Drive on Amazon. Sony's product text says it works with the slim PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro, reads Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD, and needs an internet connection the first time you pair it with the console.
If you don't own a disc collection, the drive doesn't matter to you, and the PS5 Digital Edition is the cheapest way into GTA 6.
4K TV vs 1080p screen
The Pro's pitch is image quality: more rendering power and PSSR upscaling. On a 4K TV, that's where any improvement is most likely to show. On a 1080p screen, much of that advantage is wasted, and the standard PS5 is the more sensible buy. GTA 6's display modes haven't been announced, so hold off on buying a new TV until Rockstar shares details. If you're rethinking your whole setup around GTA 6, our budget gaming setup guide covers the basics.
The real cost of each option
Here's what launch day costs at official US prices, before tax and before any accessories.
| Setup | Console | GTA 6 Standard | GTA 6 Ultimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (disc) | $649.99 | $729.98 total | $749.98 total |
| PS5 Digital | $599.99 | $679.98 total | $699.98 total |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | $979.98 total | $999.98 total |
The Standard edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate is $99.99. The Ultimate edition is digital-only, and the boxed Standard edition is a download code, so the Disc Drive isn't part of the GTA 6 math.
Sony's store listing shows a 7-day pre-load for both the Standard and Ultimate editions, so pre-loading isn't a reason to pay the extra $20.
Storage: will you need more space?
Rockstar hasn't announced GTA 6's install size, so any number you see online is a guess. What we do know is the storage each console starts with: 1TB on the standard PS5, 825GB on the Digital Edition and 2TB on the Pro. Sony's Pro page notes that part of the SSD is reserved for system software, so usable space is lower than the headline figure, and the same logic applies to every model.
If you plan to keep several big games installed alongside GTA 6, you can add an internal M.2 SSD. Sony's official requirements:
- PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD
- Capacity from 250GB to 8TB
- Form factors 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110
- Sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster recommended
- A heatsink or cooling structure, with size limits: no wider than 25mm and no thicker than 11.25mm in total
Sony's support page covers the PS5; confirm the steps match your model before installing. Two PCIe Gen4 NVMe drives sold with a heatsink are the WD_BLACK SN850X with heatsink on Amazon and the Samsung 990 PRO with heatsink on Amazon; check the listed dimensions against Sony's limits before ordering.
When to buy
As of September 25, 2026, no PS5 + GTA 6 console bundle has been announced. Sony and Rockstar have announced two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers at $84.99 each, on pre-order and shipping November 19 (the black one is a PlayStation Direct exclusive in the US). A bundle could still be announced before launch.
If you want to play on day one, buy early enough to set up and update the console before launch week. If you're on the fence about the Pro, waiting for launch coverage costs you nothing. We'll update this article before November 19 with any bundle news, official performance details from Rockstar or Sony, and any price changes. How we researched this
This comparison is based on Sony's official PS5 and PS5 Pro specifications and US prices, Rockstar's GTA 6 page and support information, and the US PlayStation Store listing. Rumors and reported comments come from named outlets and are labeled as such. NexaRig has not tested either console with GTA 6, and no performance figures in this article are our own measurements. We'll update the comparison when the game launches on November 19.
FAQ
Will GTA 6 run at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro?
Nobody knows yet. Rockstar hasn't announced a frame-rate target for any console. Game Rant has reported comments from Rockstar North's Rob Nelson about 30 fps console builds, a leak covered by TweakTown points to 4K at 30 fps on the Pro, and an insider has claimed 60 fps. All of these are unconfirmed.
Is GTA 6 PS5 Pro Enhanced, and what does that actually improve?
Yes, Sony's US PlayStation Store lists it as PS5 Pro Enhanced. What that improves hasn't been detailed. On other games, Enhanced can mean sharper images, higher frame rates or better ray tracing, depending on what the developer chooses.
Should I buy a PS5 Pro just for GTA 6, or is a base PS5 enough?
A base PS5 is enough to play GTA 6. The Pro only makes sense if you're buying a new console anyway, have a 4K TV and can absorb the $250 to $300 price gap. If you already own a PS5, wait for launch coverage.
Do I need the Disc Drive to play GTA 6 on PS5 Pro?
No. The PS5 Pro has no disc drive, but Rockstar says GTA 6's boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc. You'd only need the $79.99 Disc Drive for other disc-based games or movies.
Will there be a GTA 6 PS5 bundle?
None has been announced as of September 25, 2026. One could still appear before the November 19 launch, and we'll update this article if it does.
